Watching Time Pass By
I sit in front of the fire,
Watching time pass by.
It’s twenty past ten, and then it’s ten thirty,
It’s amazing what you miss in the blink of an eye,
The world never stops turning,
Though sometimes you wish it would.
Would it ever stop spinning,
Even if it could?
Why can’t we pause time,
Like we do a tape.
So a lover’s kiss could last forever,
And you’ll never miss their warm embrace.
But then the lonely tears,
That sometimes well up in my eyes,
Will never roll down my cheek,
Which will never be wiped dry.
The sun will only see half the world,
And the flowers will never grow.
The heavens will never bless us,
With the rain or snow.
The unborn child will never know,
What it is to live.
The mother and father will never receive,
The love and joy that child has to give.
So would it be any better,
If we could pause time?
Looking at everything I would miss,
I’d rather keep watching it pass by.
Watching Time Pass By was written back in 1999, tarin was sat alone at home feeling a tad sorry for himself and he was suddenly inspired to write this poem and it happened as it says. tarin entered it in to a competition, unfortunately he didn’t win but he was invited to read it to an audience who seemed to like it. In 2001 tarin sent it in to Poetry Today who published it in their anthology “Twilight Echoes” in December that same year.
